This is a wooden statue of a Buddhist God, the bodhisattva Maitreya (Miroku Bosatsu). This work is considered to be a masterpiece of the Asuka-period. The statue was created with the hope for peace within the country. The Koryu-ji Temple was built to enshrine this statue when it was granted to the local ruling family by Prince Shotoku. The statue has an abiding, enchanting smile with downcast eyes which add a graceful tone to its noble expression.

How to make kogaku-men


It takes for 1and half month until completion.

Step1

This is important process as same as paint.

The mask makes with all natural materials, powder of wood, woods and clay.

The archetype of mask let dry for 7 or 10 days.

File the dried archetype of mask make expression genial. After that, paint with lacquer that made by shellfish powder for polish and smooth.This dry and paint repeat for 10times or more. It is depends on the mask.

Rub the yellow soil in the dried archetype of mask,

Paint the mask to make expression.Paint at late at night, there is nothing just silent.Not the master paint, but something let do that.

After the paint, the mask let dry, and that is completion.The masks create as heal owner’s spirit for long time.
